Study Notes That Link: A Student's Canvas Setup

Students: take lecture notes as linked Markdown cards on a visual canvas. Diagrams, PDFs and spaced review — files you keep after graduation.

Highlighting a textbook feels productive and evaporates by exam week. What sticks is reconstruction: explaining ideas in your own words and connecting them. A canvas of linked cards is that process made visible — and when every card is a Markdown file, your degree leaves with you instead of expiring with a student discount.

One board per course

A board per class, cards per lecture: title, summary in your own words, open questions at the bottom. Link ruthlessly — [[mitosis]] inside the genetics card, back to the cell-cycle overview — because the exam tests connections, not cards. The inspector’s backlinks become a map of what points at what, which is suspiciously close to what the professor will ask.

Diagrams without drawing apps

A fenced mermaid block renders as the diagram it describes — cycles, flows, timelines — while staying plain text in the file, so a diff shows the shape you changed. PDF readings land on the board as real first pages next to your notes on them. Voice notes from study groups sit beside the summary cards. Mixed media, one surface, zero subscription.

Review with search, not rereading

⌘K searches every card in the folder over a local full-text index — with the network off, in the library basement with no signal. Deep links (toxvas://card/<id>) let you pin the week’s hard cards somewhere you’ll trip over them. Tasks with @due dates turn “review chapter 4” from a wish into a dated line in a file.

The honest limits

No mobile app, so lecture-hall capture on your phone isn’t the workflow — take raw notes anywhere, process them into cards at your Mac. No shared workspaces for group projects; this is a personal system. And it’s $9 after the 7-day trial, which is either trivial or real money depending on the semester — the trial covers a full exam cycle to decide. What you build stays yours regardless: plain files, no account, yours after graduation when every “free for students” plan has expired. Try it free, one board per course, and link everything.

Try it on your own folder.

Toxvas is free for 7 days, no account. Every card becomes a Markdown file you keep.
