How Writers Plot a Book on a Markdown Canvas (Mac)
Plot a novel on a visual canvas where every scene is a Markdown file. Arrange chapters spatially without giving up plain-text files.

Novels die in linear documents. Chapter twelve needs something from chapter three, a character arc spans the whole middle, and scrolling never shows you the shape of the thing. Writers who think spatially end up with index cards on a wall — and then retype them. A Markdown canvas removes the retyping: the cards on the board are the files.
The setup: one board, three frames
Make a board called after the book. Double-click empty canvas for a card at that spot, press F to frame sections, and drag cards into three frames: Setup, Confrontation, Resolution — or acts, if you prefer. Each card is one scene: a title, a one-line summary, and the draft itself below in Markdown. The card is cards/<id>.md in your folder, so the outline and the manuscript are the same object. Rearranging the plot is dragging; nothing to sync, nothing to re-export.
Link the threads, don’t lose them
Type [[her decision]] and it resolves to that card’s title; everything pointing back lists itself in the inspector. Character arcs, planted clues, running jokes — link them and the backlinks become your continuity checker. Connect two cards with C and label the connector (“lands in”, “contradicts”, “pays off”) so the relationship is visible on the board, not just in your head.
Research lives beside the draft, not in another app
A photograph of the street your scene is set on, a PDF’s real first page, a voice note recorded on a walk — import a file and it lands on the board on its own. Mood, reference, and manuscript share one surface instead of three apps. The Library grid with full-text search (⌘K, works offline) finds any line you’ve ever written, in any card.
The honest limits
Toxvas won’t count your words per day, won’t format a manuscript for submission, and won’t sync to your phone for writing on the train — it’s Mac-only and deliberately un-networked. Writers who need goals, streaks, and mobile capture should pair it with (or pick) a dedicated writing app. What it does is keep the structure of a book visible while every word stays a plain file: try the free trial, plot one act, and keep the folder whatever you decide.
Try it on your own folder.
Toxvas is free for 7 days, no account. Every card becomes a Markdown file you keep.
